Prolapse

Pelvic prolapse is a condition in which pelvic organs including the uterus, vagina, bladder or rectum descend, or fall out of their normal positions. Prolapse occurs due to several factors such vaginal delivery, age, hysterectomy, straining, obesity, chronic constipation and family history. Without medical treatment or surgery, these structures may eventually prolapse. These organs can actually protrude beyond the vaginal opening and are visible or palpable outside the body. This is when the patient feels "something like a ball” of tissue out of the vaginal opening.

  • Prolapse of the bladder is termed a cystocele
  • Prolapse of the rectum is termed a rectocele
  • Prolapse of the vagina and uterus together is termed a utero-vaginal prolapse.
  • More than one organ can prolapse simultaneously.
